For parents wanting timeless, natural newborn photographs without stress or overwhelm.

Those first days with a newborn are unlike anything else. The days blur together in feeds, half-finished cups of tea, and the quiet adjustment of learning about this new little life. Slow and all-consuming in the moment, yet gone almost as quickly as they arrive.

It’s often only afterwards that parents realise how fleeting the newborn stage really is.

I’m a lifestyle newborn and family photographer based in London, working with families in their own homes across the city. My work is centred on documenting these early days as they naturally unfold - quietly, honestly, and without interruption,

Lifestyle newborn photography is less about perfectly posed images and more about preserving a feeling of those early days at home together. Years from now, you will not remember how tidy the house was or the exact details of the day. You will remember how it felt to be there.

That is what these photographs are for.

If you’re considering booking a lifestyle newborn session, you probably have questions about timing, preparation, what to wear, whether siblings or pets can be included, and what actually happens if your baby refuses to sleep.

This guide covers everything parents commonly ask before booking a lifestyle newborn photography session, helping you feel informed and properly prepared for the experience.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO BOOK A LIFESTYLE NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHER?

It’s best to enquire during your second trimester, ideally before 28 weeks of pregnancy. Lifestyle newborn photographers usually take a limited number of newborn sessions each month to allow flexibility around due dates.

Booking early simply ensures your place is held around your estimated due date, so once your baby arrives, the session can be arranged at a time that feels right for you. There is no need to confirm an exact date in advance, that is always arranged once your baby arrives.

Most newborn photographers schedule sessions within the first two weeks after birth. This is when babies are generally sleepier and still naturally curled up, which allows for those soft, settled images that feel so characteristic of this stage.

WHAT AGE IS BEST FOR A LIFESTYLE NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHY SESSION?

Lifestyle newborn sessions are typically held within the first 2-6 weeks after birth.

Unlike traditional studio newborn photography, in-home lifestyle sessions are not dependent on very sleepy, curled-up poses. Instead, they focus on natural connection within your home environment, which means slightly older babies are just as well suited.

In the early weeks, babies may be sleepier and spend more time in your arms or curled up. As they grow a little, they become more alert, stretch more often, and begin to show early expressions. All of this is part of the story - there is no “perfect” window, only the one that reflects your family as you are.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING A LIFESTYLE NEWBORN SESSION AT HOME?

A lifestyle newborn session is gentle, unhurried, and shaped entirely around your baby’s needs.

There is no expectation for your home to look like a show home. The focus is on real moments within your everyday environment, often utilising naturally lit spaces such as bedrooms, living rooms, or the nursery.

Most sessions include:

  • natural family interaction

  • feeding and settling moments

  • sibling and pet connection (if applicable)

  • baby in arms, on beds, or in moses baskets

  • quiet, observational storytelling

Nothing is forced or overly directed. Instead, gentle guidance is given so that moments can unfold naturally.

Many parents are surprised by how calm the experience feels. More like a slow morning at home than a formal photography session.

HOW LONG DOES A LIFESTYLE NEWBORN SESSION TAKE?

Most lifestyle newborn sessions last around 2-3 hours.

This allows plenty of time for feeding, changing, soothing, and simply taking things at your baby’s pace. There is no rush. If your baby needs settling or a break, the session pauses.

Everything is built around keeping the environment calm and flexible. This relaxed timing ensures your baby stays comfortable while capturing a variety of beautiful shots.

SHOULD PARENTS BE IN THE PHOTOS?

Absolutely.

These early days are not only about your baby, but about you as a family.

Often, parents are hesitant to be photographed in the early postpartum period, but these images become some of the most meaningful over time. Not because they are perfect, but because they are real.

CAN SIBLINGS BE INCLUDED IN NEWBORN PHOTOS?

Yes - and they are very welcome! Including siblings in newborn photos is a wonderful way to capture your growing family’s bond.

Lifestyle newborn sessions often include siblings in a very natural way. There is no expectation for them to sit still or behave perfectly. Instead, they are gently guided into moments of interaction, capturing the unpredictable energy of young children adjusting to a new arrival.

CAN PETS BE INCLUDED IN A LIFESTYLE NEWBORN SESSION?

Absolutely! If they’re part of your family life, they belong in the pictures too.

In many homes, pets are just as present in those early days as anyone else, often quietly hovering nearby, curious about the new arrival, or wanting to stay close to their people. Including them can add a lovely sense of honesty to your images. A reflection of life as it really is in those first weeks at home.

Much like siblings, there’s no expectation for pets to behave perfectly or sit still. They’re simply included in a natural and relaxed way. Often this means a few gentle portraits together, and then allowing them to drift in and out of the session as they feel comfortable.

If you’re unsure whether to include your pet, it’s always something we can discuss in advance. Every home setup is slightly different, and we can shape the session accordingly.

WHAT HAPPENS IF MY BABY WON’T SLEEP DURING THE SESSION?

This is one of the most common concerns, and also one of the easiest to reassure.

Your baby does not need to be asleep for a beautiful lifestyle newborn session.

In fact, many of the most meaningful images come from awake moments. Soft blinking eyes, tiny stretches, or the way they settle into your chest while being fed or held.

If your baby sleeps, that is wonderful. If not, nothing is lost. The focus is always on connection rather than sleep or posing.

HOW TO PREPARE YOUR HOME FOR A NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHY SESSION

There is no need to deep clean or rearrange your home before a session. A simple tidy of cluttered surfaces, putting away laundry, and removing anything you would prefer not to be visible in your photographs is more than enough.

Most lifestyle photographers will use the rooms with the best natural light, typically bedrooms or living areas. Making the bed with a simple, neutral duvet or bedding also helps create a clean, timeless backdrop for newborn images.

It’s helpful to keep your home comfortably warm - ideally around 22–24°C - during your newborn session, particularly as your baby may be lightly dressed or undressed at times. A gentle warmth helps them stay settled and relaxed.

WHAT TO WEAR FOR LIFESTYLE NEWBORN FAMILY PHOTOS

Clothing plays a subtle but important role in creating a cohesive, timeless feel. The aim is to keep it simple and refined, avoiding anything overly bold or distracting.

WHAT WORKS WELL:

  • neutral or soft colors like creams, pastels, or muted tones to keep the focus on your baby.

  • relaxed, comfortable fabrics and textures such as linen, cotton, wool and silk all photograph beautifully.

  • comfortable clothing and simple silhouettes that allows easy movement, especially if you’ll be holding your baby.

  • minimal and simple accessories help to elevate your images.

WHAT TO AVOID:

  • large logos or branding, which can date your pictures very quickly

  • bright or neon colours distract from your babies delicate features

  • matching outfits which don't reflect indivual family peronsalities

  • heavy patterns which override the minimalist aesthetic

The goal is to coordinate rather than match exactly, allowing connection and emotion to remain the focus.

FINAL THOUGHT

These early days pass in a way that feels both slow and impossibly fast. You’re in the thick of it - adjusting, recovering, learning this new rhythm - and only later does the detail of it all begin to surface.

Lifestyle newborn photography is simply a way of holding onto that time as it really was. Not staged or arranged, but gently observed. The quiet in-between moments at home, the way your baby settles into you, and the beginning of your family story as it unfolds.

If this feels like something you’d like to document, I’d love to hear from you.
