For families wanting natural, honest photographs of everyday life at home.

The everyday rhythm of family life with young children is often lived in fragments. Days shaped by repetition and small moments that don’t always feel significant as they happen, yet, in hindsight, become the ones that matter most.

I’m a lifestyle newborn and family photographer based in South East London, working with families across London, UK. My work is centred on natural light and quiet observation, with a focus on connection and the honest reality of life at home.

If you’re considering a family photoshoot in London, this guide is here to answer the most common questions parents ask before booking a session - from what to expect and how to prepare, to what to wear and how everything naturally unfolds at home.

WHAT SHOULD WE WEAR FOR FAMILY PHOTOS?

What you wear naturally shapes the tone of your images. Simple, comfortable pieces tend to sit best - clothing that feels like an extension of your family rather than something arranged for the camera.

Soft neutrals, muted tones, and natural fabrics often work well. Linen, cotton, knitwear. Things that move easily and feel familiar. Rather than matching, it is usually the subtle coordination of tones that feels most natural and photograph most beautifully.

Bare feet at home, simple footwear outdoors, soft and unobtrusive choices throughout. Nothing that pulls attention away from the interaction between people. These small decisions simply help keep the focus where it naturally sits.

WHAT COLOURS SIT WELL IN NATURAL FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHY?

Certain tones sit best within both home and outdoor settings, particularly in the softer light found across London, UK.

Muted neutrals, earthy greens, warm browns, soft blues, and off-whites tend to feel timeless, allowing connection and expression to remain at the centre of the frame.

Bright colours, busy patterns, and heavy contrast can sometimes draw attention away from your family, so are generally best avoided.

HOW DO YOU WORK WITH CHILDREN DURING A SESSION?

Children rarely need to be heavily directed during a session, and there is no need to ask them to “behave” in advance. It is often most helpful to frame the experience as something light and enjoyable - a relaxed family activity rather than a formal photoshoot.

Once we begin, the session naturally follows their rhythm. Often, the most honest images appear in the in-between moments: a glance, a shift in energy, a brief moment of closeness before they move on again.

Space is given for children to be themselves, without pressure, interruption, or expectation.

WHEN DOES THE LIGHT WORK BEST?

Most of my work takes place in your home, where the rhythm of the session is guided by natural window light rather than a specific time of day. For in-home sessions, I typically arrive around 11am, when light is softer and more settled within the space.

If you prefer an outdoor session, these are generally held a couple of hours before sunset, when the light becomes lower, warmer, and more flattering as the day softens.

In both settings, the timing is simply about working with the most natural light available, allowing the session to feel calm and visually consistent with the way the moment unfolds.

HOW DO WE CHOOSE BETWEEN AN IN-HOME OR OUTDOOR SESSION?

Both settings hold something different, so it really comes down to personal preference.

At home, everything feels close and familiar. The rooms you move through every day become part of the story, creating a natural sense of intimacy within the images.

Outdoors, there is more space. Movement feels easier, lighter. Places such as Richmond Park or Hampstead Heath offer a natural backdrop where children can move freely and without constraint.

Both approaches simply reflect different ways of seeing family life as it already is.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD WE BOOK A FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHY SESSION IN LONDON?

There is no set rule to this.

Some families choose to return every year, especially in the early years when change happens so quickly.

Others choose to document specific chapters - a new arrival, an important milestone, a particular stage they want to remember before it passes quietly into the next.

HOW DO WE PREPARE OUR HOME FOR A FAMILY SESSION?

Preparation tends to be simpler than it feels beforehand.

A few familiar things (snacks, water, comfort items for younger children) are often enough. Beyond that, there is little that needs arranging.

Homes do not need to be changed or staged. The intention is not to remove signs of life, but to work gently within them. It can be helpful to do a light tidy of the spaces we’re likely to use, and to put away anything you wouldn’t want in the background of your images.

FINAL THOUGHT

Family life can feel chaotic while you’re living it, but it moves quickly - made up of ordinary moments that don’t always seem significant until they’ve already passed.

Family photography is simply a way of preserving the moment as it is right now. Not polished or arranged, but real and full of connection.

If you’d like to preserve this stage of your family life, I’d love to hear from you.
